Summer Jewellery will not Fade in this Festive Season

Summer JewelleryWhat about Summer Jewellery. FORGET subtlety – there's no chance summer jewellery will be fading into the background this festive season.

Eye-popping strands of stones and gems, shoulder-duster earrings and punch-packing rings should promptly make their way on to Christmas wishlists if they haven't already crept into our wardrobes.

Riley Burnett founder designer Jennie Riley plies her craft in a workshop at Lennox Head in northern New South Wales, but has a client list including Jessica Alba, Brooke Shields and Winona Ryder.

She tips Christmas and New Year will be brimming with show-stopping statement pieces, whether they be bangles, cuffs, necklaces, rings or hoops.

"Go for bold jewel colours, semi-precious stones and chunky silver, gold and wood," Riley says.

"Glittering costume jewellery is also coming back."

When shopping for stunning baubles this Christmas, Riley has some advice to ensure your selection will remain a favourite.

"Buying jewellery for someone can be quite daunting, but it makes the most treasured gift – it's all about noticing the small things," she says.

She tells customers to think about the complexion of the person they're buying for, as well as what colours she normally wears.

"Select a piece that will complement her complexion but is maybe a bit bolder than what she would normally choose for herself," Riley says.

She also advises us to think about the woman's sense of style and her best features before settling on a purchase.

"If she has beautiful eyes, go for a pair of earrings.

"If she talks with her hands, choose an elegant cuff or stunning bangle that catches the eye," Riley says.

Brisbane's Chelsea de Luca adds there's no better time than the holiday season to adorn ourselves with sparkle.

"The gob-smacking pieces are definitely big this season but for the girl who may not be so game, a cocktail ring is perfect," she says.

"They are a great gift for the girl who has everything, add instant glamour and are a no-fuss addition to any outfit."

Head-turning pieces are de Luca's trademark, and can transform a simple outfit in seconds.

"Being able to wear vintage-style jewellery in a fresh modern way to make an outfit your own is the perfect way to create individuality," she says.

Queensland jewellers Karydis, Kate Slade and Salia are among the stable of other designers who offer timeless attention-grabbing pieces.
